Serengeti Great Wildebeest Migration
Overview
What is the Great Migration?
The Great Migration is characterized by a circular route that the animals follow, driven by the seasonal rains and grass availability. This migration is not just a simple journey; it is a complex and dynamic movement that takes place throughout the year, with the animals facing numerous challenges, including predators and harsh environmental conditions.
When Does the Migration Occur?
The migration typically follows a seasonal pattern:
- January to March: The wildebeest gather in the southern Serengeti for calving season. This is an exciting time to witness newborn calves and the predators that follow them.
- April to May: As the rains begin to fall, the herds start moving northwest towards the central Serengeti, seeking greener pastures.
- June to July: The migration continues northward, with the animals crossing the Grumeti River, where they face the dangers of crocodiles lurking in the waters.
- August to September: The herds reach the Mara River, where dramatic crossings occur, providing thrilling viewing opportunities as they navigate the treacherous waters.
- October to December: After spending time in the Maasai Mara in Kenya, the animals begin their journey back south to the Serengeti, completing the cycle.
Why is the Great Migration Important?
The Great Migration is not only a breathtaking spectacle but also plays a crucial role in the ecosystem. The movement of these large herds helps to maintain the balance of the grasslands and supports a diverse range of wildlife. Additionally, the migration attracts numerous tourists and wildlife enthusiasts, contributing significantly to the local economy and conservation efforts.
Experiencing the Great Migration
For those looking to witness this incredible event, there are various safari options available, including guided tours and luxury lodges strategically located along the migration route. The best time to visit depends on the specific phase of the migration you wish to experience, but generally, the dry season (June to October) offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.
The Serengeti Great Migration is a natural wonder that captivates visitors from around the world. Whether you’re an avid wildlife enthusiast or simply seeking an unforgettable adventure, witnessing this extraordinary event is a bucket-list experience that showcases the beauty and resilience of nature.

I was picked up promptly from my hotel on both days. The vehicles used were clean and comfortable. All the staff the drivers and especially Kim were phenomenal at their jobs and kept us smiling and laughing all day. Dior went out of his way and made sure that even on a 1 day safari trip our hearts were filled by the sight of lions which is very very rare. Did not expect to see them on a day trip. They were teaching us songs the whole way and I couldn’t have chosen a better tour operator for my activities. He took us to see the Masai tribe and experienced the traditional and native ways of the tribe. I have genuinely built a friendship with Kim and he goes above and beyond his responsibilities to ensure his clients are happy.
